Keyword research is a tool that you can't get around. You must use the keyword research tools in order to get your business on the most effective list and stay out of the black hole of indexes. You don't want to lose money on meaningless rankings and marketing campaigns. Instead you need to focus your website where the money can be found. By targeting the right keyword you can increase sales in a matter of months. We have the process you should use for keyword searches listed below.
Before you can use the tools effectively you need to understand the misconceptions. The most common thought in keyword research is that you know the best words to use without being told. Most of the time you will be wrong. There are hundreds of keywords out there, and some that should get high search numbers are actually relatively low. You can't predict how a consumer is going to find you, but you can search for the most commonly used words with the tools at hand. These tools narrow the keywords down to ones you could use, instead of you taking the industry keywords you might use for a job application. Industry speak is often too narrow a focus. Don't go for the generic or high dollar terms either. You need a term that applies to your site, but is not narrow. In other words don't go for a keyword like ‘dogs' when you sell ‘baby shoes'. It won't help you get the right type of traffic.

To gain traffic you need to start slowly with your keyword research. Don't just hop into a list of potential keywords and think they will work. Instead brain storm. Think about the words you would use, your friends, family, and even co-workers might use. These words will help you in the construction of the site. You can see if these words are high on the keyword search tool. You can also look at competitor meta tags. Their meta tags will lead the way to more keywords you might want to use or see if your keywords are better.

Next we will delve into the search tools we have been discussing. The keyword search tools are meant for search engine optimization sites . They will show you a list of words that could be used. These will state the number of times they have been used to do searches by consumers. These numbers are an approximation, so make sure you are careful in the choice. The higher the number usually the better the word. You can even search for phrases if you need to. You also need to know how competitive that word is. Sometimes a competitive word will mean you don't get the best rankings. In this case you need to offer a couple of non competitive, but equal candidates to the process.

Once you have the initial list of keywords you can start to whittle them down. You should have a spreadsheet to list them in. By offering a spread sheet you can look to see what primary words you have and what to use in the secondary spot. You should have a mix of broad and targeted keywords to get the target audience. Target words are great, but again you don't want to be too narrow or you miss potential consumers.

You then need to plan how you will use the keywords. For example what will be in the title, meta description, meta keywords, headings, alt text, and anchor text. You need a mixture of words in all these categories in order to succeed. These are your on page SEO targets. The keywords need to be worked into the articles with a balance and normalcy. Don't just throw a keyword in there because you need the ranking it will produce. Instead offer a keyword or even the plural of that word to make it agree with the sentence.

Once you have the initial keyword list you will want to keep checking for better words as well as refreshing your site. You are never done in SEO. You have to monitor the word's effectiveness as well as the other competition to make sure that you stay ahead.

Much of what is written here can also be applied to planning and setting up a pay per click campaign on any of the major ppc networks such as Adwords, Microsoft Adcenter or Yahoo.
